Agency Presentation
Focus on the Arts
Jody Weinberg, Coordinator

Thank you to Moraine Township for their support of Focus on the Arts 2013. Ms. Weinberg handed out pens and button pins with the Focus logo which were designed by students and are handed out at school to help publicize Focus to the student body and create excitement about Focus. The fine arts festival will be held April 5th, 9th, 10th 11th and 12th. Movie Night will present student produced movies. Bradley Ross, Highland Park High School alum and award winning film editor, has been mentoring the students in their film projects with two-hour Skype sessions once a week from New York including guests artists, offering one-on-ones concerning each project. Music Night (Opening Night) will include music professionals from the Chicago area who have been working with and playing with the jazz band and choir. Together they will present an evening of blues, gospel and jazz. For Art Night the students are building a structure using canned foods, later to be donated to the Township Food Pantry. The use of computers, architectural forms and creative art concepts are used in the process of creating the structure. There will be 250 workshops during the day. This year there will also be a focus on social issues using art to communicate these issues to the student body. Three graffiti artists will be coming. The students will be writing and telling their own stories put to movement with dance and they are also working with dance professionals. These events are free and open to the community, exposing the community and students to so many wonderful things about the arts, giving students a lifelong appreciation for art and maybe even a career in the arts. The High School expects approximately 1000 to 1500 people of all ages to attend Art Night. Trustee Moreno emphasized that the grant was given in order to provide opportunities for students and the community who might not otherwise be exposed to fine arts programs of this nature.
