MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING
March 22, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by Supervisor Mari Barnes, and upon roll call the following members were present: Trustees Bryna Gamson, Margoth Moreno, Cynthia Plouché and Jeff Zaluda; Supervisor Mari Barnes. Also Present: Assessor Peter Koukos; Director General Assistance Tracy Coleman; community members Janet Freed, Steve Hirsh, and Wendi Ezgur. Clerk Ellen Gussin was absent.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the Regular Meeting of March 8, 2007 were amended to reflect that families that needed housing the night of the North Shore Estates fire in Highwood were accommodated at the Moraine Hotel by the City of Highwood, not Moraine Township.
Approval of Bills
Trustee Zaluda moved, seconded by Trustee Plouché, approval of the bills. Upon roll call, motion carried but Trustee Gamson abstained because she had not been able to review the bills in advance of the meeting.
Public Comment
Steve Hirsh, candidate for the Highland Park City Council, identified himself as a member of the Highland Park Community Foundation Board of Directors and expressed personal interest in our grant process and increased communication among agencies awarding grants to similar agencies.
Assessor’s Report
Assessor Koukos thanked Trustee Gamson for the changes made to the website. He also reported on trends in housing sales as well as the ongoing process of neighborhood analyses, comparing actual market sales to what the Assessor’s office estimates had been. In general the market appears to have done over 40% better than the Assessor’s estimates.
Citizen Grant Advisory Committee Recommendations
Chair Wendi Ezgur presented the committee’s recommendations and the Board asked questions about several of the recommendations. Supervisor Barnes thanked the committee members, Dr. Gerald Burke, Harry Crane, Helen Dombrow, Wendi Ezgur, Nancy Rotering, and John Sirotti for their diligent efforts. Recommendations attached.
Grant Decisions
The Board will vote on the grants at its next meeting on April 26.
Supervisor’s Report
Supervisor Barnes announced the upcoming TOI meeting on April 5 that she and Trustee Plouché will be attending. She also announced the Annual Meeting on Tuesday, April 10 at 6 PM at the Township office; she invited the public to attend and encouraged participation. Saturday, May 12, will be the next Postal Service food drive on behalf of the Moraine Township Food Pantry; Supervisor Barnes announced the need for strong-bodied volunteers to help in the afternoon in unloading the postal trucks and carrying bags to the basement for stocking.
Committee Reports
Food Pantry – Trustee Moreno reported that the food stock is now dwindling but she anticipates the upcoming food drive to replenish the shelves.
Transportation – The second van from PACE will be arriving shortly.
Old Business
Trustee Moreno gave an update on the March 7 fire in Highwood and reported that every family has been taken care of; she assembled food baskets and called upon each family impacted.
New Business
Posters publicizing the paratransit van services are being distributed, particularly in Highwood. Supervisor Barnes reported that the Township will be taking a leadership position in convening a meeting to which District 112 and 113 as well as other appropriate agencies will be invited to adopt a community-wide emergency procedure for such disasters as the fire.
Adjournment
With no further business to conduct, Trustee Zaluda moved, seconded by Trustee Gamson, the meeting be adjourned at 9:10 PM. Motion carried.
