MORAINE TOWNSHIP'S "PANTRY PLANTS GARDEN PROJECT"
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Attention gardeners and volunteer-minded residents! Get down and dirty with Moraine Township beginning on June 6. The Township's annual "Pantry Plants Garden Project" will be installed on Saturday, June 6 beginning at 8:30AM at the Park District's Woodridge Park on Barberry Road in Highland Park. It's BYO (Bring Your Own tools) and will require the willing hands of volunteer gardeners throughout the season. Individuals and families are invited to call the Township Office for details at 847-432-3240.
"Anton's Fruit Ranch has again generously agreed to donate young plants of our choosing, and the Park District of Highland Park is again providing the location as well as initial soil cultivation," according to Township Supervisor Mari Barnes. "The Township created Pantry Plants in 2006, and it is truly a collaborative effort – which is, of course, deeply appreciated."
Volunteer efforts from clients and others in the community have resulted in fresh produce in the Moraine Township Food Pantry during the closing weeks of summer and fall, adding to the items donated to and purchased by the Township.
"Between 75 to 90 bags of groceries are distributed every week from our Food Pantry, but we don't get to provide fresh foods because of storage issues. Growing our own tomatoes and peppers adds a caring, personal and healthy touch to the weekly bags," noted Barnes.
The Township switched to re-usable cloth bags for client groceries earlier this year, to contribute to a greener community. Providing an opportunity to clients and other community members to grow healthy local vegetables is another way to support the green movement.
"We are also hoping to find a donated sign for the garden so that volunteers can indicate when plants were last watered or weeded. Anyone with skills to make a simple sign, ideally from recycled natural materials, should contact us as soon as possible," added Barnes.
Food Pantry/Clothing Closet and Pantry Plants Garden Project details are available on the Moraine Township website at http://morainetownship.org. To volunteer, please contact the Supervisor's office at 847-432-3240 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
