MORAINE DOOR-TO-DOOR FARES STAY LOW FOR RESIDENTS

In the wake of the news over yet another crisis in public transit, and with it, the spectre of steeply rising fares, Moraine Township's Supervisor Mari Barnes reports that the Township's award-winning paratransit van service, Moraine Door-to-Door, will not be increasing fares for the foreseeable future. Fares have been $4 per ride since the program's inception in 2006, and will remain at that level.

"We're here to help fill those gaps in human services for the neediest among us," Barnes said recently. "Moraine Door-to-Door vans have been dependable, affordable local transportation for residents needing to get to medical appointments up to as far away as 15 miles, and we will continue to provide this service for the $4 fare."

"Even though we lease the two vans from PACE, we are not affected by their recurring funding crises, and have a strong commitment to serving the healthcare and transportation needs of our residents," she added.

Seniors, disabled and economically disadvantaged residents needing transportation to medical appointments are qualified passengers under the Moraine Door-to-Door paratransit van program. Mobility equipment and caregivers ride at no extra charge. Users simply call the Township's dedicated phone line 48 hours ahead to schedule pick-up at their door. The number to call for van scheduling is 847-432-3000.

A new voice will greet callers to the van line at 847-432-3000, Grizell Toledo, who has replaced Paula Peddle in that role. Peddle has moved on to a new function working with the Supervisor on General Assistance. Both staff members are bilingual in English and Spanish.

Moraine Township also continues to provide qualified residents with taxi coupons worth $3 towards use of local taxis. Residents call taxi providers on their own, and use a coupon to offset some of the fare. There are no township boundary restrictions for the use of either the vans or the taxi coupons, except to airports.

For detailed information about the Moraine Township transportation program and other services to residents, go to their website at http://morainetownship.org or call the main phone number, 847-432-3240. The office is located at 777 Central Avenue in Highland Park.
