MORAINE BOARD ENDORSES SENIOR TRANSIT HALF-FARE LEGISLATION
At their meeting of February 25, the Moraine Township Board of Trustees and Clerk endorsed the efforts of members of the Illinois legislature (including our Representative Karen May) to restore funds to the public transit system by enacting an economic means test for seniors to ride free. The measure, HB4654, passed 83-27 on February 24 in the Illinois House and has been sent to the Illinois Senate. It stipulates that half-fares (in place prior to the crippling "all seniors ride free" program) for all persons over 65 years of age be restored. However, free transit would be extended to those citizens earning incomes triggering Circuit Breaker help (presently, single person income about $23,000 or household income under $37,000).
The Township Board and Clerk urge citizens to contact their State Senator and Governor Quinn to support this logical, equitable, ethical and economically sound bill. Locally, Senator Susan Garrett has endorsed HB4654 and will sign on as a sponsor as soon as it moves to the Illinois Senate.
"We all suffer when public transportation options are underfunded and lost," comments Supervisor Mari Barnes. "This is one step we can take to help preserve public transportation for all."
Moraine Township provides a low cost paratransit van service, Moraine Door-to-Door, to residents primarily in need of transportation to and from medical appointments, up to a 15 mile radius from township borders. Moraine leases two vans from PACE and hires their own drivers to perform this service for Township residents, charging $4 each way, including caregivers, if needed, at no extra cost. Seniors, disabled and economically disadvantaged residents qualify for Moraine Door-to-Door paratransit, which requires a 48-hour advance reservation (to a dedicated line, 847-432-3000). The Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park has granted underwriting funds for this service since its inception in 2006.
