Phyllis Santullano Holiday Gift Drive

We are reminded daily of how fortunate we are to live in a community with a spirit of generosity and compassion that is second to none. Each year Moraine Townships seeks sponsors to partner with us in the Phyllis Santullano Holiday Gift Drive. Our local school districts and nursery schools identify students whose families may not be able to provide gifts. The students fill out wish lists and are paired with generous donors. As a reminder of how many families in our community are in need, almost 26% of our District 112 students qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program.

If you would like to become a sponsor, please email back the attached form (PDF download) no later than Friday. November 8, 2013 and let us know how many children you are willing to sponsor. In fairness to all the children, please limit spending to about $40 - $50 per child. You may also mail or drop off the form at our office, 777 Central Avenue, Highland Park.

For those of you who never knew Phyllis Santullano, she was a Highland Park City Council member during the '70s and '80s who many referred to as "the conscience of our community." She founded an organization known as The North Suburban Self-Help Center, whose mission was to help families from all cultures in our community who were struggling. As a strong advocate for the interests of the least fortunate, Phyllis was a voice for the voiceless in our community. More amazing, she did it all mostly from a reclining position, having been struck with polio as a young woman. I was fortunate enough to be Co-President of the Highland Park / Highwood League of Woman Voters with Phyllis, and the privilege of working with her left an indelible mark on my life and my heart.

Moraine Township's Holiday Gift Drive in small part helps to keep Phyllis' spirit of compassion and generosity alive in our community.
