Healthcare Foundation Grant Award Helps Moraine Township Keep Transportation Costs Affordable for Seniors and Disabled Residents
Moraine Township is delighted to announce that the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park has once again awarded a grant in support of the Moraine Township Door-to-Door paratransit van service. The Foundation has been underwriting rides to medical appointments for seniors and disabled residents almost since the inception of the Township's van service in 2006.
In making the grant, Healthcare Foundation Chairman James C. Styer noted that "the trustees would like to express their support for the high quality program you provide to the Highland Park/Highwood community."
The 2015 award of $65,000 will enable the Township to keep rides affordable. "More than 60% of our riders are low-income or disabled," notes Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi. "The Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park's support has made it possible for us to heavily subsidize our transportation program to ensure that it remains affordable for all our residents."
Trustee Amy Zisook, whose portfolio includes Township Transportation, explained that "while medical trips are a priority, seniors without family in the area who cannot drive, or should not drive, are encouraged to use our vans for quality-of-life trips."
Rider feedback has been uniformly positive, indicating the van program's importance in the ability of riders to access post-surgical rehab services, life-saving dialysis, family respite for residents attending adult day programming, and independence for seniors no longer able to drive.
Township vans run through difficult weather conditions, including the sub-zero temperatures, to ensure that residents are able to keep their critical medical appointments for dialysis and long-scheduled surgeries. Over 4,600 rides were provided to Township residents during calendar year 2014.
"While many residents opt to cancel non-critical trips, we keep the vans running during most weather conditions to help our residents access critical medical services," noted Linda Contreras, who manages the Township van schedule.
Moraine Township's Door-to-Door Van transports seniors and disabled residents to appointments up to 15 miles from the Township border Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and can be booked 48 hours in advance. Medical appointments are a priority, but if the schedule permits, residents can use the van for grocery shopping or other needs. Call 847-432-3000 to schedule an appointment.
