Income-Qualified Moraine Township Students Receive Breakfast and Lunch Food During Summer Vacation

Boxes of cereals, snacks, and more fill the Moraine Township office to provide breakfast and lunch during summer vacation to students who qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program during the school year but do not receive meals during school vacations. The effort is made possible thanks to tremendous support and donations from the community and Highland Park Hospital.

"With one of every four elementary students in Highland Park and Highwood qualifying for the federal free/reduced lunch program, and use of our Food Pantry increasing, food insecurity is an unfortunate reality in our cities," explains Moraine Township Trustee Amy Zisook who is Co-Chairing the effort with Township Clerk Gail Feiger Brown.

During a community meeting hosted by the Township to address food insecurity, Highland Park High School Counseling Chair Alesia Margetis noted that vacations are stressful times for families when students are not fed at school. The additional food costs for a family during the long summer school break can strain resources already stretched.

Elementary School District 112 and Highland Park High School have partnered in this effort by reaching out to qualified families and inviting them to participate in the program during winter, spring and summer school vacations. Almost 1,000 bags of shelf-stable and fresh food were distributed to families during school vacations in the last twelve months.

"The positive response of families to this effort has been gratifying," said Moraine Township Clerk Gail Feiger Brown. "Our community has responded with resources and volunteer help in this effort."
