Moraine Township Food Pantry Thanks Boy Scouts and Sunset Foods - Every bag does count!

The Boy Scouts focused their efforts on Scouting for Food and Moraine Township Food Pantry benefited!

"We were amazed by the 150 bags of groceries delivered to the Food Pantry by Boy Scout Troop #150 over the last week in coordination with the annual Northeast Illinois Council of Boy Scouts and Sunset Foods to help local food pantries," said Moraine Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi.

Chris Fardoux, Troop 150 Scoutmaster, applauds the Troop’s work on this effort and is thrilled with the results of the drive. The regional partnership between the Northeast Illinois Council Boy Scouts of America and Sunset Foods involves Scouts distributing door hangers and bags to area households requesting food donations, and returning to pick up the food and deliver it to Sunset Foods, who then distributes donations to local pantries. Scouts throughout northern Illinois participated in this event through their community and it has been a very effective service project for over fifteen years.

Moraine Township Food Pantry Coordinator, Linda Contreras, noted that “in addition to the annual Scouting for Food effort, Highland Park’s Sunset Foods also partners with the Pantry on a variety of programs, including weekly donations of fresh produce and bakery goods, that make it possible for our clients to provide nutritious meals to their families with limited funds.”

“With 26% of Highland Park/Highwood School District 112 students qualifying for the federal free-and-reduced federal lunch program, food insecurity is a reality even in our affluent community,” commented Moraine Township Trustee Cindy Wolfson.

When residents visit Moraine Township’s Food Pantry, they receive are offered produce and bakery products, protein such as frozen meat, eggs or cheese, as well as shelf-stable food.
