Sunset Foods Shoppers Share Holiday Spirit
Moraine Township Thanks Sunset’s Generous Customers

During the first weekend in December, Sunset Foods customers responded to Moraine Township Food Pantry volunteers and added donations at checkout or the contribution bin to help the Food Pantry purchase produce, eggs, cheese and meat throughout the year. Almost 50 volunteers, some working multiple shifts over three days, helped the Township raise a record $14,100.00 from Sunset shoppers.

Highlighting the overwhelming generosity of its customers, Sunset Foods Vice-President Frank Lomoro noted that “a significant percentage of our shoppers joined in the effort to help make the holiday special for local families going through difficult times.”

Township Trustee Cindy Wolfson, who has spearheaded this effort for the sixth year, commented on the importance of this contribution to the Moraine Township Food Pantry’s effort to continue to add perishable food to help our Food Pantry clients stretch their food budget.

“We are so fortunate to be part of this amazing caring and generous community, and grateful to Sunset for their ongoing support,” commented Trustee Wolfson. “Sunset Foods lives the ideal of giving back to the community and demonstrates compassion and concern for all of our residents.”

With 24% of Highland Park/Highwood elementary school students qualifying for the federal free or reduced lunch program, and many seniors in our community struggling to live on a fixed income, use of the Pantry has been increasing. The Pantry serves over 7,300 resident-visits annually.

“The event exceeded all of our expectations, and will provide our Pantry with the resources necessary to continue to address food insecurity in our community,” said Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi. “Sunset Foods also partners with our Pantry through weekly donations of fresh produce and bakery goods that make it possible for our clients to provide nutritious meals to their families with limited funds.”
