Township Pantry Plants Garden Project Begins May 31: Volunteers Wanted!

The Moraine Township Pantry Plants Garden Project kicks off Saturday, May 31 with initial cultivation and planting at its spot in Woodridge Park in southwest Highland Park. Township Supervisor Mari Barnes and Trustees invite everyone interested to join in this family-friendly activity that grows fresh produce for the Township's Food Pantry.

"We love to see community members come together in this helpful, healthy way every year, since it was first initiated in 2006," observed Barnes. "As always, we're asking people to come, starting at 9:00am, with their own planting tools, if possible."

Consumers and donors alike work the plots all through the growing season, making this harvest a very special way to connect with one another for the sake of good nutrition for needy neighbors.

Ongoing cultivation throughout the growing season is needed, so May 31 is not the only day volunteers are needed and welcomed, according to the Township.

Each year, the Park District of Highland Park lends Moraine Township its garden space, preparing it for cultivation, and Anton's Fruit Ranch generously provides young plants like peppers, tomatoes, lettuces, and beans, free of charge to the Township.

"We're very grateful to the Park District, Anton's, and our volunteers," Barnes noted.
