CITIZEN LATINO ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Citizen Latino Advisory Committee Purpose
The mission of the Moraine Township Citizen Latino Advisory Committee is to enhance the ability of the Moraine Township Board of Trustees to make informed policy decisions regarding the local Latino community; and to encourage Latino residents to become involved in local government.
Members of the Latino Advisory are ombudsmen to our Spanish-speaking/heritage residents, seeking to open channels of communication and bringing to the Board's attention gaps in information or services that might be improved through Township intervention. The Board also wishes to foster further grassroots government participation by establishing a welcoming atmosphere.

Projects
The Advisors have been studying HEALTH issues within the community. Nutrition is a present focus.
To that end, they have heard from professional staff at the Lake County Health Department's North Shore Health Center located in Highland Park at 1840 Greenbay Road. Staff cited the high incidence of obesity and diabetes prevalent in the Latino community that could be avoided through improved diet habits. Food portion control is one educational tool that is utilized. See illustrated examples provided by clinic staff:English version,Spanish version. Clinic staff toured the Township's Food Pantry, and will assist with promoting the Pantry Plants Garden in season.
Advisors also have been studying FINANCIAL LITERACY issues within the Latino community and plan to work towards improvement in this area as well.
Periodic updates on these and other topics may be obtained by reading reports submitted to the Board, incorporated into online Minutes, or by attending committee meetings.
