(Award-Winning!) TRANSPORTATION

Moraine Door-to-Door Vans
Moraine Township initiated a local van transportation service in 2006, enabling qualified residents (seniors, disabled, and/or low income) to travel even outside Township boundaries to medical appointments (as far as a 15 mile radius) with increased convenience and nominal expense. The first van leased from Pace was a paratransit-equipped vehicle. A second van with standard seating was added in 2007. Since 2010, two paratransit vans have been providing wheelchair lift service. The Township employs the drivers, and our own staff schedule advance appointments for rides on "Moraine Door-to-Door" vans.

Moraine Township was awarded a one-year $60,000 grant in FY06-07 from the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park in support of low income senior and disabled residents requiring Moraine Door-to-Door van transportation to medical appointments in the Foundation's service area. Other Lake County townships looked at ours as a model, and began to receive funding as well. Beginning in FY07-08, the Healthcare Foundation of Highland Park again chose to support Moraine's along with others coming online, and we received a generous $35,000. Their vital contributions of $35,000 continued to be awarded annually, and for FY12-13 rose to $40,000, and FY13-14 to $45,000. We are very grateful to them for this crucial support.

Procedure for Moraine Door-to-Door
Moraine Door-to-Door vans must be booked through the office with 48-hour notice to a dedicated line: 847-432-3000. Qualifying persons – especially seniors, disabled and/or low income residents – pay just $4 per trip, door to door. Van priority is on medical appointment trips, although we hope eventually to be able to allow for personal rides as well. Caregivers, if needed, and mobility equipment, ride at no extra charge.

Hours of operation, Monday through Friday: 8:30am to 4:00pm.

A Door to Door Van Transportation Policy was adopted in 2012.

Moraine Taxi Coupon Program
Moraine Township also provides a Taxi Coupon Program for seniors and disabled residents, contributing $3 to taxi ride fees. Ten coupons a month are allocated to each qualified resident. Previous boundary restrictions on taxi program coupons were lifted when transportation allocations were reconfigured in 2006; however, coupons still may not be used for airport destinations. Qualified residents may request the taxi coupon book by calling the Township Office at 847-432-3240 or stopping in during business hours. Residents make their own reservations with taxi companies serving this region; those companies and their phone numbers are listed on the coupon books. The Township does NOT make taxi ride appointments.

Moraine Transportation Recognized With State Award for Senior Services
In 2007, when Moraine's revamped transportation services were first implemented, they were recognized as best in the state by the Illinois Township Association of Senior Citizens Services Committee. Moraine Township was cited as having 2007’s most “Innovative Senior Program” among Illinois Townships. The competitive “Commitment to Senior Services Award” was given based upon the Township's transportation initiatives comprised of Moraine Door-to-Door vans and the taxi subsidy program.

RTA Passes
Seniors and disabled residents can also apply for RTA passes at the Township Office at no extra fee. Nonresident fee for this service is $5.
