In the wake of a fire at the North Shore Estates on Monday afternoon, June 15, Moraine Township Supervisor Mari Barnes wishes to remind residents that they can contribute with cash donations to the Moraine Township Charitable Fund, a 501(c)(3) entity.

"The Township is encouraging people to make cash contributions rather than donations of clothing or other items, for the time being," said Supervisor Barnes. "Nonperishable food items like rice and beans are always very welcome in our Food Pantry as well."

"What we are finding is that people burned out of their homes really need staple items, new clothing, and sometimes furniture. Cash gives us the most flexibility in meeting their immediate needs.

"The Township provides emergency shelter and supplies, mostly from cash reserves for this purpose. In the case of a large fire like this one, affecting several apartments, our cash reserves get depleted, so people who want to help are encouraged to mail or drop by our office at 777 Central in Highland Park with a check.

"As we gather the information about how much furniture is needed, we will notify the public and solicit appropriate in-kind donations at that time.

"Once again, in this emergency, municipal officials were cooperative and helpful, and the public has been generous in its outpouring of offered assistance. This is a wonderful community," concluded Barnes.
