Local Township Official Among Participants at TOI's Annual Conference

Mari Barnes, Moraine Township Supervisor, was among some 1,000 township officials who participated in the 2009 Annual Educational conference sponsored by the Township Officials of Illinois (TOI) recently held in Springfield.

TOI annually holds its conference to help township officials keep pace with the latest developments in local government management, fiscal practices, and general assistance. This year's sessions addressed effective intergovernmental agreements, township record retention, an update on township law and the sweeping changes to the Freedom of Information Act. Attendees selected from more than 35 educational sessions.

The ongoing mission of TOI is to help townships improve the effectiveness and efficiency of township officials by offering continuing education programs throughout the year.

"Moraine Township was able to save taxpayers thousands of dollars by joining the insurance pool through TOI," noted Barnes.

Delegates said the programs offered at the 2009 conference will help them carry out their township's responsibilities and that the best way to keep pace with the changes in government and their responsibilities to constituents is to participate in conferences such as the one sponsored by the Township Officials of Illinois.

"Officials learn so much by sharing problems and issues with their fellow attendees," said Bryan Smith, TOI's Executive Director. "It is the other indirect benefit for everyone."
