Sunset Foods Thanked for Successful Food Drive

Moraine Township and Sunset Foods announced that the recent holiday food drive at the Highland Park store raised over $8,000 for the Township Food Pantry.

"The event exceeded all of our expectations. Its success is crucial to our effort to continue to add perishable food to help our Food Pantry clients stretch their food budget," said Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi.

Sunset Foods President and CEO John Cortesi noted that "the generosity of residents in our community is amazing. Almost 500 Sunset customers joined in the effort to help make the holiday special for local families going through difficult times."

As evidence of the growing food insecurity in our Highland Park / Highwood community, the Township cited the 27.5% of elementary school students who qualify for the federal free or reduced lunch program, and an almost doubling of Township Food Pantry usage in the last year.

Event Chairwoman and Township Trustee Cindy Wolfson applauded the commitment of volunteers during their own holiday preparations. "We were able to staff our table with volunteers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the two days of the drive, which is a testament to the commitment of our citizens to help their neighbors in need. Sunset employees couldn't have been more helpful or supportive during one of their busiest times of the year."

"We are very fortunate to have the ongoing support of Sunset Foods, which throughout its long history has been a leader in this community," added Wolfson.
