Letter Carriers Help Stamp Out Hunger

Highland Park Letter Carriers delivered nearly 1,000 bags of food to Moraine Township’s Food Pantry Saturday, May 12, 2018, and almost 100 volunteers were here to help unload, sort and box the food.

“This was a tremendous effort on the part of our Highland Park Letter Carriers, organized by Joe Cholewa. Several Letter Carriers came to the Township after their shift to ask if we needed their help sorting the food. Their effort was far above and beyond the call of duty and deeply appreciated,” commented Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi.

This was the 26th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive, held the second Saturday of May each year. A special thanks to our generous residents who left food contributions by their mailbox for letter carriers to bring to Moraine Township’s Food Pantry.

“Our office conference room is filled with boxes of food, noted Township Trustee Amy Zisook. “The food from this drive the second Saturday of May each year helps ensure our Pantry clients have food all summer when there are fewer community food drives yet residents continue to visit the Pantry.”

“We are fortunate to live in a community of workers and residents who care about our neighbors going through difficult times, and this drive demonstrates the care and compassion of our residents who both contributed food and pitched in to volunteer,” said Trustee Cindy Wolfson.

The Township relies on a corps of volunteers who make it possible for the Food Pantry to serve our residents in need,” said Kari Guhl, Moraine Township Volunteer Coordinator. “We had the help of almost 100 volunteers and Letter Carriers, including Venture Crew 150, Highland Park Rotary Club, HPHS Key Club members, Lions Club, Highland Park’s Mayor, City Council members and City Manager and their families.”

Volunteers are critical to the operation of the Food Pantry. Moraine Township Clerk Gail Feiger Brown commented that if the Food Pantry had to pay staff to do the work our volunteers do week-in and week-out, funds to purchase food for the Pantry would be depleted quickly.

Volunteers are welcome! Visit our volunteer page to download an application, or call 847-432-3240.

Moraine Township’s Food Pantry serves income-qualified residents who are invited to visit our food pantry twice a month to receive shelf-stable food items, plus produce, dairy and frozen meat.

Thank you, Highland Park Letter Carriers!
